Mattel suffers a setback in Bratz doll ownership dispute

Mattel may not be able to claim ownership of MGA's Bratz doll product line after all. While the name and concept were developed by a designer working for Mattel, an appeals court has ruled that MGA is entitled to retain ownership, since it was responsible for turning the concept into a billion-dollar brand. "Even assuming that MGA took some ideas wrongfully, it added tremendous value by turning the ideas into products and, eventually, a popular and highly profitable brand," the appellate panel ruled.
