Teachers lead effort to study merit pay in Florida district

The American Federation of Teachers is funding a $125,000, one-year effort to study the best merit-pay system for teachers in Florida's Volusia district. A committee of teachers and administrators will study the current evaluation system before suggesting ways that student achievement could be factored in. "This is being teacher-driven and teacher-led rather than [Department of Education]-driven and led," the local union president said. "If we can come up with a fair way to figure out how student assessment impacts teacher evaluations, teachers are going to be comfortable."
