How to manage expectations when applying for college

Author and consultant Peter Van Buskirk cautions students and their parents to have reasonable expectations during the college-application process. He recommends families understand that being qualified to attend top schools does not ensure admission, and that the selective nature of college admissions is not fair. To help manage expectations, Buskirk suggests viewing the process "as an attempt to acquire 'invitations' rather than offers of admission at colleges of choice."
