Nurse Trish Beck pioneered a supply-savings program in her dialysis and nephrology care unit at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The initiative was then adopted organizationwide, with a supply-savings champion committee helping Beck lead the program. One key to the program was reducing the amount of supplies that automatically go into patients' rooms, since unused items must be discarded after discharge. "Wherever we have the opportunity to reduce unnecessary expenses on a day-to-day basis ... we take action, because we know that we are contributing to the overall expense reduction," said nurse Margaret Cusumano.
