Plant pathology plays a role in improving profitability

University of Tasmania scientist Calum Wilson, one of 15 participants in Australia's Growing Leaders 2013-National Vegetable Industry Leadership Program, said that ensuring a sustainable future for the industry was one of the challenges raised in the program. Profitability and the bottom line were also hot topics, which Wilson says can be improved with attention to plant pathology. "We're really dealing with the production of things, trying to reduce loss but also improve quality and obviously plant disease really does bite into the bottom line of a grower," he said. "From my research perspective that's been the focus, reduce the level of loss, improve the quality and get a better bottom line."
