WIC-only grocery stores called friendlier

Grocery stores that serve only low-income families in the federal Women, Infants and Children program can be more expensive than traditional grocery stores, but their employees work directly with customers to help them find items they are eligible for and minimize any embarrassment customers may feel using WIC vouchers at a traditional store. North Carolina is now home to 60 of the WIC-only stores that accept the vouchers instead of cash.
