Unions seek safety measures against chemical flavoring

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the Teamsters union will petition the government to issue an emergency temporary standard to set an exposure limit to diacetyl, a butter-flavoring agent that has been linked to lung disease. The unions will also ask that food companies that use diacetyl inform their employees and provide them with air-purifying respirators and conduct inspections.
