California will start drilling for canal project in September

California has started planning a water diversion canal that could help restore the Sacramento River Delta environment. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has endorsed the plan. In September, the Department of Water Resources will drill into the Delta to take soil samples and test its density to evaluate whether it is suitable for the canal and its intakes, siphons and tunnels. However, the project concerns some residents who say they have been shut out of the planning process.
