Marketing for sugarless gum increasingly focuses on the purported health benefits of chewing, ranging from killing germs to strengthening enamel to reducing cavities. A report from market researcher Packaged Facts states, "As long as the deep economic recession lasts, millions of Americans will think of saving money on postponed visits to the dentist, every time they select a chewing gum."
