Study finds link between animal diseases, human cancer

Canadian researchers found that prion proteins present in animal diseases such as mad cow disease become misfolded during infection and that the same physical change occurs on the surface of certain cancer cells in humans, creating a conducive environment for treatment with antibodies. The finding may provide insight into the development of effective cancer therapies.
