USA is branching out to half-hour comedy, unscripted fare

Perennial ratings magnet USA, the NBC Universal-owned network that has built its business around hour-long dramas such as "Burn Notice" and "Royal Pains," now is branching out to half-hour comedies and unscripted reality shows. "It's exciting but it's a little bit dangerous," said Jeff Wachtel, the network's president of original programming. "What people tend to do is sit on their lead, and that's the worst thing you can do. Playing it safe has never been part of our DNA."
