Location data shed light on history

Historians and archaeologists are using location data and mapping tools to look back in time and see the world as it was. A new academic field known as "spatial humanities" develops digital maps to help researchers re-examine historic events and could, for example, help historians understand why Gen. Robert E. Lee and other leaders at the Civil War battle of Gettysburg made the choices they did given the landscape.
