Lawmaker proposes increased transparency in imaging referrals

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, on Friday introduced a bill that would require self-referring physicians to report ownership interest in MRIs, CT scans, PET and other imaging services and to list alternative providers for beneficiaries. Aside from providing patients adequate information on imaging services, the Medicare Imaging Disclosure Sunshine Act of 2008 would reduce Medicare costs while helping "control the potential for overutilization of imaging services," Grassley said.
