Mass. court: Property owners hold liability for snow-related injuries

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that property owners are responsible for snow-related injuries, overturning a lower court's decision that held a department store not liable for an elderly man's injury when he slipped on ice that had accumulated "naturally" within the store's property. "We now abolish the distinction between natural and unnatural accumulations of snow and ice, and apply to all hazards arising from snow and ice the same obligation of reasonable care that a property owner owes to lawful visitors regarding all other hazards," the high court ruled.
