Metrics make a difference, says MillerCoors exec

To create a genuinely sustainable business, it's essential to set real, measurable goals, says Tom Long, president and chief commercial officer of beer giant MillerCoors. Long's company focuses on metrics such as water-to-beer ratios to reduce water use and carefully accounts for waste produced, trucks and diesel used and carriers' compliance with Environmental Protection Agency standards. "There's been a lot more talk than substantive, credible progress," Long says. "We will play a strong role in taking sustainability to a whole new level of accountability."
