States, cities eye travelers for new taxes

States, cities and counties are levying more taxes on travelers and vacationers via new charges for hotel rooms and car rentals. In July, Northern Virginia raised its "transient occupancy tax" on hotels by 3%. Selma, Calif., may double its lodging tax to 12% depending on the outcome of a November vote.
