Va. district promotes reading by providing bus rides to library

Arlington Public Schools in Virginia embarked on a program to combat the summer slide for prekindergarten through second-graders, particularly English-language learners, by providing weekly bus rides to the public library. While students worked with teachers and librarians to select and read books, the program -- offered on Wednesday evenings in July -- offered parents a financial-literacy presentation and information about community resources.
