Va. DOT pushes design-build to fast-track $230M road project

The Virginia Department of Transportation intends to use the design-build method to construct the $230 million U.S. 29-Rio Road interchange so that it can be completed by fall of 2016. Several states, such as New York and Minnesota have turned to the design-build process to accelerate construction of projects that need to be completed quickly. "You could save many months, up to a year [with design-build]," said Brian Deery, senior director of the Highway & Transportation Division at the Associated General Contractors of America. However, not all are proponents of the process.
