EPA: Almost one in 10 Superfund sites still harmful

Environmental Protection Agency officials said about 10% of Superfund's 1,230 toxic waste sites have not been cleaned up well enough to guarantee that people and drinking-water supplies will not become contaminated. An EPA spokeswoman said the agency is confident adequate protection measures exist at four-fifths of the sites and it "doesn't mean that at those remaining sites, people are subject to imminent risk."
