Budget crunches hit more school athletic programs

More schools are opting to curtail or cut school sports programs altogether as a way to save money, but some supporters of these programs say athletics can help motivate some students to stay in school, while others point to the valuable life lessons sports provide. "Education through athletics should be taken seriously because it builds the kind of teamwork, self-discipline and social skills that our children need to succeed in any career they pursue," one assistant principal said.
