A measure to make slain gay-rights pioneer Harvey Milk's birthday a day of "special significance" on the official California calendar has cleared the state Assembly and now is being considered by the Senate. The bill would call for the observance of Milk's May 22 birthday, but not declare it an official state holiday. "He literally gave his life so that I and other [gay activists] could serve in public office," said out Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco.
