Layoffs at Bell Canada will trim 2,500 jobs

To cut costs ahead of its $35 billion sale to a private-equity firm, Bell Canada will cut 6% of its work force in a move that will eliminate 30% of its executive jobs, the Canadian telecom said. President and CEO George Cope said the cuts, which would save about $294 million, were "beyond money," in its aim to trim the company's hierarchy and make it more competitive.
