Bill amendment seeks better flood protection for New Orleans

To ensure New Orleans is protected from another catastrophic flood, lawmakers have introduced an amendment to the fiscal 2010 energy and water appropriations bill requiring the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct an extensive study for building permanent, full-time pump stations at the ends of three New Orleans drainage canals along Lake Pontchartrain. The amendment also directs the Corps to adopt a "pump to the river" option that would dump flood water to the Mississippi River.
