Bill would beef up safety standards for airlines, pilots

The Airline Safety and Pilot Training Improvement Act of 2009 is scheduled to be introduced today in Congress. The bill, prompted by a crash in February near Buffalo, is an effort to mandate that all airlines incorporate the most successful safety programs. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has already implemented efforts to improve airline safety, measures that have the support of the Air Transport Association. "We believe in that process, and we believe it should be allowed to proceed to a successful conclusion," ATA President and CEO James May said.
