Slump in Japanese retail sales extends into 10th month

Falling wages and bonuses pushed Japanese consumers to spend less last month than economists had expected. Retail sales dropped 3% compared with June 2008, marking the 10th consecutive month of decline and raising the specter of deflation. Economists had forecast a 2.5% decline.
