Statoil eyes role in industry's initiative against oil spills

Norway's Statoil seeks to join ExxonMobil, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell and ConocoPhillips in their joint venture to launch a $1 billion rapid-response system for future Gulf deepwater oil spills. "Yesterday, I wrote a letter to the CEOs of the involved companies, with the message that we want to contribute," said Statoil CEO Helge Lund on Thursday. He also praised the oil majors for their plan.
