After losing an early chance, Va. back in the running for offshore wind development

The U.S. lost out on an opportunity when Gamesa opted to set up its 5-megawatt prototype offshore wind turbine in the Canary Islands instead of in the waters off the coast of Virginia, writes Pete Danko. However, Virginia is now back in the running to host one of the country's first offshore wind farms, thanks to the federal government's plan to auction leases for an area off the state's coast that has the potential to generate 2,000 MW of wind-generated electricity, Danko notes.
