Close attention to nature provides clues to better engineering

Many of the problems encountered by engineers have already been solved in nature, and the bio-mimicry that sometimes occurs across species is also being applied in the human environment. One example is the needle-nose on Japan's high-speed bullet trains, which mimics the slender beak of the kingfisher bird to reduce noise as the train exits tunnels.
