Committee warns of fallout of cost overruns to U.K. smart meter plan

The potential benefits of a massive smart meter effort in the United Kingdom will be undermined if energy regulators don't work together to ensure communications infrastructure is in place before deployments accelerate. That's according to a report from a government Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, which warned that poor consumer experiences could damage the reputation of the program if excessive costs limit end-user savings.
