Hospitals offer unique incentives to attract new physicians

Mississippi and Louisiana use loan forgiveness programs to get more new physicians to practice in rural, underserved areas, but hospitals also have local initiatives that encourage doctors to stay. Natchez Regional Medical Center in Mississippi gives doctors a chance to practice in an area through temporary internship-type positions before they commit to a full-time position, and Riverland Medical Center in Louisiana pays physician and staff salaries of a new practice for a year or until the practice can be self-sustaining.
