Hotel business in Detroit surges amid bankruptcy

The improving health of Detroit's lodging industry hints that it may have avoided the economic slump that sent the city into bankruptcy protection. Data from STR show occupancy rates this year at 61.3%, compared with 47.5% in 2009. The impending return of the landmark Pontchartrain Hotel as the Crowne Plaza Detroit Downtown Convention Center is just one of several new hotel openings on the way over the next few years.
