Retailers reach out to teachers

Teachers spent an average of $552 of their own resources on school supplies last year, up from an average of $458 two years before, an industry group survey found. Big-box retailers such as Target are offering school donations and other promotions that could appeal to teachers, and some specialty stores are offering special membership and frequent-buyer cards.
