Gestational diabetes key risk factor for Type 2 diabetes later on

Canadian researchers studied more than 633,000 women who gave birth in Toronto from 1995 to 2002 and found gestational diabetes was the biggest risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes, increasing the odds more than 37-fold. Only 2% of the women who did not have gestational diabetes went on to get Type 2 diabetes in the nine-year follow-up period, compared with 19% of the women who developed diabetes during pregnancy.
