The economic-stimulus package is allowing construction firms to retain workers and save jobs, said Stephen Sandherr, the CEO of a national trade group. However, at this point, the industry needs additional help before it can hire new workers. A recent survey by the group found that just 22% of participating companies had received contracts funded by the stimulus plan. Sandherr also said the stimulus package is falling short of its potential. "With construction unemployment at almost double the national rate, it is disappointing to see so many stimulus programs getting off to such a slow start," he said.
