Excess weight gain seen early with DMPA birth control

Researchers said most women who gain weight while using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate for birth control see a more than 5% increase in body weight in the first six months. The study found about 25% of DMPA users experienced early weight gain and these women also had a steeper slope of weight gain over time. Researchers said clinicians should advise women on DMPA who see excessive weight gain about other contraceptive methods.
