Federal government, states set goals for zero net energy buildings

Interest is growing in zero net energy buildings and homes that operate with no monthly energy bills. The Department of Energy has said that by 2025 it hopes to develop commercial buildings that offset the energy used from an electricity grid through efficiencies and on-site renewable energy. In California, the state utilities commission wants all new homes to use zero net energy by 2020.
