Ruling may increase competition in education technology

In a ruling that may boost competition in the electronic-learning industry, a federal appeals court sided with Desire2Learn, saying Blackboard Inc.'s patent on a log-in system is too broad. Both companies make software to track grades, host online discussions and distribute electronic class materials. Some experts said Blackboard's initial patent might have prevented other companies from entering the market.
