Qualcomm has bought a minor stake in Alcatel-Lucent as part of the French gear-maker's plan to solicit investments from three to five partners that will total a little more than a 5% interest in the vendor. Qualcomm will partner with Alcatel on small-cell research and development. "Other discussions are underway," said chief executive Michel Combes, who was reporting his first full quarterly results since taking the helm. Alcatel also said Tuesday that second-quarter sales grew 1.9%, and the company reported a small operating profit, beating analysts' estimates. However, its net loss widened because of a one-time charge.
