Blood transfusions for cats are more complicated than those for dogs because cats must receive their specific blood type, writes veterinary hospital director David Caddell of Ann Arbor Animal Hospital. Nine Lives Blood Services in Lansing, Mich., is one of the few feline blood banks in the country. The facility houses donor cats in an enriching, open setting where their health and well-being are maintained for the 15 months they are active blood donors. The cats are then available for adoption and remain at the facility until a suitable home is found.
