Malls turn to upscale eateries to draw foot traffic

Crowded food courts are making way for more chic, higher-end restaurants in malls as consumer taste shifts to meals they can brag about on social media and mall owners look for ways to draw shoppers away from online retailers. Swankier eateries also boast higher sales than their fast-food counterparts, industry figures show. "The ratio is tilting more [toward upscale dining experiences} than retail, especially as shopping centers have to offer something more that people can't get online," said Tim Magill, an architect at 5+ Design.
