OIG: Hospital policies vary on patient observation, admission

Variations in hospital admission and observation policies affect what services people are eligible for post-discharge, including nursing home care, according to a report from the HHS Office of Inspector General that looked at 2012 Medicare charges. The report recommends hospitals count observation visits toward the three-day inpatient minimum for nursing home coverage under Medicare, and the government is expected to release final rules that assume patients hospitalized two nights or longer are inpatients.
