Regulators proceed cautiously in mortgage market

Banks and consumer advocacy groups joined forces to urge regulators to ease some requirements on mortgage-market restrictions, and regulators are wary that some rules could restrict access to credit, hurting borrowers and lenders. "Listen, I think everybody is trying to make sure the housing market doesn't lead the country into another double-dip recession," said Barry Zigas, director of housing policy for one advocacy group.
