Researchers study reasons why students throw away food

A research team from Virginia Tech is looking into food waste in schools. Researchers recently spent some time studying discarded food in one elementary school in Montgomery County, Va., where they found students threw away about 44% of the food served. They noted in their research that students were more likely to throw away side salads and whole fruit. The team plans to expand their research to middle and high schools.
