Residential growth and strategy attract grocers to D.C.

A Washington, D.C., initiative to provide healthy food to a growing population has resulted in the establishment of 21 groceries citywide in the past 13 years, including chains such as Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's and smaller stores such as Fairlawn Market. "The expansion of grocers in the city is partly a response to residential growth but also the district's strategic campaign to fill a void in our retail mix," Washington, DC Economic Partnership President and CEO Keith Sellars.
