RFA's Dinneen: Rolling back RFS would hurt U.S. efforts to combat climate change

Efforts to combat climate change would be dealt a heavy blow if plans to weaken or repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard succeed, as ethanol is the only clean-burning biofuel available in enough quantities to significantly cut emissions in the transportation sector, writes Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. Studies have confirmed that using ethanol cuts carbon emissions by up to 30% to 50% compared to gasoline, Dinneen notes. Even just tweaking the RFS "would create uncertainty that would discourage growing investments in new environmentally friendly, job-creating biofuel technologies," Dinneen states.
