Sinclair sees big potential in Washington market, cable channel

Sinclair Broadcast Group viewed the chance to acquire Allbritton's WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., as a "once-in-a-lifetime event," CEO David Smith said. Sinclair's station acquisitions also include the cable network NewsChannel 8, which could be expanded to other markets, Smith said. In related news, Craig Aaron, president of watchdog group Free Press, criticized the deal, describing "the rapid and massive expansion of Sinclair Broadcast Group" as "unwelcome news for local TV viewers."
