Women often downplay their accomplishments, either because of societal pressure or for fear of alienating their friends, writes Peggy Drexler, a professor of psychology at Cornell University. This is a dangerous habit to get into, because it can prevent women from accomplishing their professional goals. "[B]y striving to be overly humble or not stand out, women miss opportunities to get ahead," she writes.
