World's largest borer begins 14-month Seattle dig

The mammoth tunnel-boring machine named "Bertha" began drilling a new tunnel for Highway 99 Tuesday in Seattle. "Her face is spinning and she's grinding her way into the headwall," said Linea Laird, program administrator. Touted as the largest boring machine in the world, the TBM is expected to spend the next 14 months at work to complete a two-mile tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct along the city's waterfront.
