Va. pilot program would provide dental care to nursing-home residents

Virginia's Medicaid program does not cover dental care for nursing-home patients, meaning many such patients must go to a hospital with conditions such as infections, at great expense to taxpayers, writes Virginia Dental Association President Ted Sherwin. The organization is working with stakeholders on a pilot program to place oral health coordinators in nursing homes to provide dental care to those in need and save taxpayer dollars through reduced Medicaid expenditures on avoidable hospital care, Sherwin writes.
