Where to place top performers

Is it better to spread your top performers throughout organizational teams or should you lump them all together and get a really efficient team going? There's little research to support an answer, but one online abstract suggests spreading out your top performers will increase the average talent level in all groups, thus enticing those who perform lower to work harder.
